April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month!

The National Safety Council recognizes April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This event is intended to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving and encourage motorists like you to minimize potential distractions behind the wheel.

Distracted driving can be defined as anything that causes you to divert full or partial attention away from the road. Contrary to popular belief, humans actually lack the ability to complete two cognitive functions at the same time. Instead of balancing both tasks simultaneously, the brain quickly switches back and forth between each task you are trying to complete. This gives of the illusion of multitasking and creates unfounded confidence to drive distracted.

There are three forms of distraction that play a part in the staggering statistics. Visual distraction can be anything from checking a text message, or even looking around at scenery or road

side attractions. Manual distractions categorizes activities that require the driver to take their hands off the wheel. This can include eating and drinking, trying to find something in the glovebox, or fumbling with buttons on the radio. Lastly, cognitive distractions can be defined as activity that requires active thought such as talking on the phone or to a passenger. Regardless of the type of distraction, it is important to know that if your focus is anywhere but the road, you are driving distracted.

We each have a responsibility to do our part in ending distracted driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, approximately 8 deaths and 1,095 injuries occur every day due to distracted driving. Here is what you can do to avoid being apart of the statistic:

  • Put your phone out of reach to resist temptations to check it while you're driving.
  • Pre-plan navigation and program your GPS before you leave.
  • Select your music or radio station prior to the drive so that you are not shuffling through songs while driving.
  • Make sure all passengers (pets too) are secured safely
  • Do not put on makeup or groom while driving.
  • Avoid eating and drinking while behind the wheel.
Most importantly, STAY FOCUSED! It only takes a second for disaster to occur.
